Our interest in the structure and function of intermediate filament proteins was initiated approximately 7 years ago while working on the regulation of macromolecular synthesis in picornavirus-infected mam malian cells.

Intermediate filaments are one of three types of cytoskeletal elements. The other two are thin filaments (actin) and microtubules. Frequently the three components work together to enhance both structural integrity, cell shape, and cell and organelle motility. Intermediate filaments are stable, durable. intermediate filaments 1.

35-1) are strong but flexible polymers that provide mechanical support for cells ranging from bacteria to human tissues. These filaments were named intermediate because their diameter of about 10 nm is intermediate between the diameters of the thick and thin filaments in striated muscles (see Figs. 39-3 and 39-8). Intermediate filaments (IFs) are thought to function as absorbers of mechanical stress and form cytoskeletal networks that serve to support cell shape. As we just stated, intermediate filaments are cytoskeletal components of cells that are mid-sized of the three cytoskeletal fibers. Think of them as the small pickup truck of these fibers. Intermediate filaments are about 10 nm in diameter with wavy profiles in electron micrographs of thin sections of cells (Fig. 35-1B) or after negative staining isolated filaments (Fig. 35-3B).

Intermediate filaments make up one of three major components of the cytoskeleton. Intermediate filaments are assembled from a large family of proteins that polymerize to filaments of about 10 nm in diameter, thus intermediate to that of actin filaments and microtubules.

These filaments were named intermediate because their diameter of about 10 nm is intermediate between the diameters of the thick and thin filaments in striated muscles (see Figs. 39-3 and 39-8). Intermediate filaments (IFs) are a type of cytoskeletal fiber found in many eukaryotic cells; they're also believed to be found in fungi and other single-celled eukaryotes, but that has not been fully accepted by scientists. In some cells, there are as many as ten times the number of intermediate filaments as there are other microfilaments or Difference Between Intermediate Filaments and Microfilaments is that Intermediate filaments are the structures that form a network around the nucleus and extend to the periphery of the cell. While Microfilaments are long and fine threadlike structures with a diameter of about 3 to 6 nm. These filaments are made up of non-tubular contractile proteins called actin and myosin. Intermediate filaments were originally named because with diameters between 8 and 10 nm, they are intermediate in size between the microtubules (at 25 nm) and the microfilaments at 7 nm.
